The Look Of A Worried Man!

The eyes tell the story.

This my good people is what a worried man looks like.

This is the look of man in fear for his very life and the life of his family.

Bai, you should have known better than to frak with the Great Council of Chiefs. O sa coqa tiko na matani moto qori!

Bai's only hope was to get the $350 million from EU. His government has no more money.

Bai had hoped his No. 1 team would have told the EU like it is, but when they got there, his No. 1 team got their collective asses handed back to them on a platter... yes it was a silver one!

EU's non-negotiable conditions for the release of funds include:-

- elections by March 2009

- suitable road map by June 30 2007

- appointing of VP in accordance with the Constitution

- upholding of every facet of the Constitution, including human rights, freedom of expression and independence and integrity of the judiciary

- go back to the camp and stay there

- bring back the GCC and respect their independence

- lift the Public Emergency Regulations, and

- no more of this crap about invoking the doctrine of necessity

In other words, if Bai wants his money he has to swallow his pride and reverse everything he's done over the past few months.

He's already started by diplomatically apologising to the US for wrongly directing the removal of the barricades at Loftus Street.

But that's not enough, Bai.

I imagine there will be more grovelling in the coming weeks. Just try to read between the lines and you will see a very remorseful Bai... quick with the mouth but a little slow in the head!

Inciting Behaivour

The Fiji military's now infamous universal explanation given to the media whenever someone is taken in for questioning at Delainabua is that they have been taken in for "inciting" the public and that these "inciting" acts are a threat to the national security of Fiji. These detainees are to be "informed" that they cannot and must not to disturb the peace which currently prevails in Fiji.

What is exactly constitutes "inciting" behaviour and who exactly is being incited are anyone's guess? But these are pertinent questions to which the Fiji military offers no immediate answers.

Oxfords Advanced Learners Dictionary defines the word incite as "the urging or persuading of someone to do something by making him very angry".

To be quite honest, "incitement", as an excuse, is becoming less and less credible and more and more annoying as more people are taken up to Delainabua to be given "the treatment" at the hands of overzealous soldiers who actually believe in their hearts (and minds) that what they are doing is right.

What exactly did these detainees do to deserve such treatment at the hands of the military? Mostly, they spoke up against the military for taking other people to Delainabua in the first place.

The irony in all this is that it is this very act of oppression, which is uniting Fijians, Indians and other races, like never before, against the military.

The irony would be quite laughable if it weren't such a serious issue for the people going up to Delainabua.

I shall you leave then with this thought for the day: EVERY DICTATOR IS AN ENEMY OF FREEDOM, AN OPPONENT OF LAW.

A New Begining

This Blog is my sanctuary.

My sanctuary from the would-be oppressors of my freedoms, as enshrined in the Constitution of my beloved country.

I live in Fiji and, like many people in my country, I cherish and value the fundamental principles of democracy and the freedoms that come with it. The right to life and personal liberty. The freedom from servitude and forced labour. The freedom from cruel and degrading treatment. The freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures. The fundamental rights afforded to arrested or detained persons. The freedom of expression. The freedom of assembly, association and movement. The freedom of religion. The right to privacy, education and to equality under the law.

I am dismayed that in recent times, these freedoms have been taken away from the ordinary citizens of Fiji. I am dismayed that in recent times these freedoms have been violated and raped in the worst possible way. I am dismayed that these violations are not matters of the past, but they continue even today, unconcealed and uncontested. They continue today for the many people who are being taken up to the QEB for purportedly "inciting" civil unrest or threatening national security. They continue today for the many people who are being taken up to the various military camps around Fiji for suspected criminal or corrupt activities ("suspected" being the operative word). They continue today for just about anybody who dares to "disturb the present climate of peace created by the military".

This then is a record of my thoughts. Thoughts on the so called "creeping coup" and the "coup makers". Thoughts on the current state of the political environment. Thoughts on the continuation of human rights abuses by the military and their continued disregard for human dignity and sometimes even human life.

Whatever they do now, the military must realise that dictatorial, authoritarian, repressive and cruel regimes never last. Their tactics of fear and intimidation to control the general public and to supress popular opinion is, ironically, the very instrument that will galavanise the masses to rebel against them. Their end is now inevitable.

This Blog therefore shall track and record the events leading to that inevitable end.
